My English Language Learning Journey

Fun fact: When I was in lower primary, I had Dyslexia, this hindered my learning of the English language and made me really hate it.  However with flash cards and hard work my parents and I finally overcame it.

Although I never had a problem with speaking in the English language, I had never truly grasped the concept of grammar; I never knew the difference between a past continuous tense and a present continuous tense, if they even existed.  In primary school we had small English handbooks that thought us about grammar, mine was always very untouched. Even till now when writing an essay, I would just read the sentence in my head if it sounds good I would think it is correct.

While I was younger, I was always much more interested in math and science compared to the language subjects, this could be because of the grammar exams and spelling tests. Little did I know that this tests and the handbook would affect me in the future, namely ES1102.

However after repeatedly stating how much I disregard the English language, I actually love reading a lot, I remembered the day Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows came out, I finished the book within the same day. Unfortunately it was a long time since I picked up a book to read, it became a habit of mine to find excuses not to read anything usually I would convince myself a book is too much commitment to undertake. I hope maybe by the time the module is over, I would have started reading again and maybe finally I would be able to tell the difference between a past continuous tense and a present continuous tense. Looking forward!

  1. Hi Zhengguang,

  2. Hey Zhengguang

Don't worry too much about not being able to differentiate between present and past continuous tense, I'm sure you'll get it sooner or later! Hope you manage to pick up reading as a habit also!

All the best in everything you do!

  3. Thank you, Zhengguang, for the open, honest reflection. You systematically address some of the highlights of your learning journey, and you do so in a concise way. This essay is very informative. The only problem is the sloppiness of your language use. The types of errors you make are relatively few, but you repeat those throughout the discussion. Something like "run on sentences" is an easy-to-understand concept, as simple as being able to differentiate between present and past continuous. Your problem is not grammar. Look, man, you are an engineering student. The math concepts you will need to address on a regular basis are so much more complex than the simple grammar rules we are talking about. Just quit using the excuse that this stuff is difficult. It's more mentally challenging to take the MRT from Clementi Station to Orchard Road than to do any of this stuff. Trust me. And do me a favor: Open your brain to these simple English grammar conventions. Life will be easier if you do. :)

    1) The following are all run on sentences. Please see https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/598/02/

    2) However with flash cards and hard work my parents and I finally overcame it. / However after repeatedly stating.... / Unfortunately it was > (lack of correct punctuation)

    3) a **past** continuous tense: I WAS READING your classmates blog posts YESTERDAY.

a **present** continuous tense: I AM READING your blog post NOW.

    Is that so difficult? :)

    4) thought > ?

    5) this tests > ?

    6) I remembered the day... > (verb tense error)

I look forward to working with you, and I anticipate seeing a smile on your face at the end of this course.

    1. Thank you Mr Bradstone for the reply, I will definitely try out the online writing lab. I will also stop using grammar as an excuse. If a primary school student can learn them, I can probably do that too in this semester.

  8. I don't know why students become choosy when there is language subject available. I can understand it is not easy to have but they should believe in themselves. https://www.capstoneproject.net/our-capstone-projects/aviation-capstone-project isreally working for students.
